Every Windows version beginning with Windows XP includes an installed Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) (Terminal Services) client  whose version is determined by that of the operating system or last applied Windows Service Pack. Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a proprietary protocol developed by Microsoft, which concerns providing a user with a graphical interface to another computer. Clients exist for most versions of Microsoft Windows (including Windows Mobile), Linux, Unix, Mac OS X and other modern operating systems. By default the server listens on TCP port 3389.  I was recently asked to install and configure Windows server with enable Multiple Concurrent Connections on Remote Desktop Connection. I’ll describe this in a step by step procedure soon.

GoToMyPC is a remote control software service that enables the user to operate their computer from another computer, over the Internet. Citrix Online, a division of Citrix Systems, produces GoToMyPC. This product allows remote access to a PC from an Internet-connected computer or wireless device running any of several operating systems. Software is installed and remote access is obtained by logging onto the GoToMyPC Web site.

Our first choice of remote desktop software is TeamViewer

TeamViewer is a computer software package for remote control, desktop sharing, and file transfer between computers. The software operates with Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux and is able to function while the computers are protected by firewalls and NAT proxy. It is also possible to access a machine running Teamviewer with a web browser. While the main focus of the application is to facilitate online desktop support and remote control of computers, collaboration and presentation features are included within the package.

TeamViewer lets you establish instant connections to any remote computers from any other PC via Internet. This product offers encoded session for remote access to the target PC. TeamViewer is free for all non-commercial users, it doesn’t use browser to remote control but it use a small application that also can be run as portable application.

The second choice of remote desktop software is Anyplace Control

Anyplace Control is a Windows based remote PC control software product for remote access and control of remote PC located either in local network or in the Internet. It displays the remote computer’s desktop on the screen of local PC, and allows control of that computer using the local mouse and keyboard. The software has a file transfer feature to send files between computers.

Remote users create an Access Password, username and password to access the target PC. The program must be installed at both computers, with client part of the software at the local PC.

The third choice of remote desktop software is LogMeIn

LogMeIn is a suite of software services that provides remote access to computers over the Internet. The various product versions are designed for both end users and professional help desk personnel. LogMeIn comprises a number of different product, including a free remote access product, LogMeIn Free. LogMeIn Pro2 and LogMeIn Free provide end users remote desktop access with optional remote sound, file management, printer access, and online chat features through a web browser. The LogMeIn Ignition product is an optional add-on that provides access without a web browser. Several features like secondary user and group management were stripped off after LogMeIn Central was introduced, forcing users who need those features to pay for LogMeIn Central.

UltraVNC is the next choice of remote desktop software.

UltraVNC also know as uVNC is an open source application for the Microsoft Windows operating system that uses the VNC protocol to control another computer’s screen remotely. It bears a strong resemblance to RealVNC Free Edition, however in addition to remote control it adds various features, such as an encryption plugin to secure the client/server connection. It also supports file transfers, chat functionality and various authentication methods. The software is free and distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. UltraVNC works fully as a service under Windows Vista with its User Account Control (UAC).

CrossLoop is a remote desktop service from CrossLoop Inc.

This service allows users to share their computer screens and collaborate with others over the internet.UltraVNC (previously used TightVNC) on Windows and Chicken of the VNC on a Mac is used to establish a connection between computers, and a separate application to handle the billing of services between the two endpoints. CrossLoop encrypts the data sent across the computers. Data is encrypted using a 128-bit Blowfish encryption algorithm. The service might work even if one or both of the computers are behind a firewall.
